Coptic Life & Traditions Today

Coptic Orthodox life is lived with a steady rhythm of prayer, community, and spiritual seasons that shape the year and the home.

A rhythm of fasting and feasts

Fasting is a major part of Coptic spirituality, especially through well-known seasons like the Nativity Fast, Great Lent, the Apostles’ Fast, and the Fast of the Virgin Mary.¹ Coptic teaching emphasizes that fasting is not merely about food, but about turning the heart toward God and renewing one’s focus on heaven.²

A Church shaped by monasticism

Egypt is honored as the land from which Christian monasticism spread, with saints like Anthony, Macarius, and Pachomius central to that heritage.³ The Coptic Church also highlights how St. Pachomius’ monastic rule influenced monastic life beyond Egypt.⁴

Remembering saints and martyrs

Copts have a deep devotion to saints—especially martyrs—and the Church continues to commemorate modern martyrs today. The Coptic Orthodox Church recognizes the 21 martyrs of Libya as saints and commemorates them annually in its liturgical calendar.⁵ The Church also notes an official annual commemoration connected to these contemporary martyrs.⁶

Keeping heritage alive: calendar and language

Copts celebrate the Feast of Nayrouz (Coptic New Year / Feast of the Martyrs) and preserve the Era of the Martyrs (Anno Martyrum) beginning in 284 A.D.⁷ The Church also preserves the Coptic language in church life and records its historical use in prayers and worship.⁸

A worldwide Church family

Today, the Coptic Orthodox Church serves communities far beyond Egypt, with organized dioceses across many regions worldwide.⁹
